PVS Manager

The Pool-Video-Switch (PVS) is a system for software-based control over bwLehrpool clients' screens.

The PVS Manager (or PVS Control Panel) lets you control and manage the system. This allows you to display screen contents on one or multiple other screens, or black them out. Participating clients must explicitly agree to comply with the privacy policy before their screens can appear and be controlled in the PVS Manager. The existing screen transfers are displayed clearly to the client via a status bar. A client-side exit from the system is possible at any time.

For more information about the PVS system, its capabilities, and Tutor and client instructions, see Pool Video Switch (PVS).

Use Case

Until recently, many Tutors held their lectures with the help of a notebook they brought themselves, which was connected to a projector via a switch. Although Tutors were able to display their own screen there was of course no possibility to display the screen contents of others via a projector or to display the Tutor's (or other course participants') screen contents to one or all monitors. The PVS system closes this gap.

From the beginning, the focus was on providing the simplest possible core functions in order to make it easy to learn how to use the system quickly, and to make it intuitive and reliable to use in everyday life.

The system (both PVS Manager and Client) works exclusively on bwLehrpool clients.

PVS Manager Station

To work comfortably, we recommend having a computer with a touchscreen (dedicated to the PVS system) at the Tutor's place. The hardware resources required for the PVS Manager are minimal:

CPU RAM Disk Network connection Graphics card Monitor
PVS station 32bit CPU sufficient 1 GB RAM Not necessary 100 MBit / s No 3D necessary Touchscreen recommended, 18-24 inches 1)

PVS-Station Example

PVS-Station on the left, Touchscreen on a swivel arm

Here is an example of a pool room in the computer center of the University of Freiburg, which later received a PVS workstation. The hardware:

* Touchscreen: Iiyama 54.6cm (21.5") T2252MTS-B3
* Computer: bwPC2(!) With 1 GB RAM, no hard disk, integrated graphics.
* Monitor mount (swivel arm): Newstar FPMA-D600BLACK

The monitor mounted on the swivel arm should be able to move freely in all directions and be adjustable to accommodate for different user heights (also while sitting). In addition, the monitor mount should be reasonably tiltable to maximize the possible viewing angle with different postures. 2).

Of course, the (touch) screen of the PVS manager can also be built into a desk, or the like.

Alternatively, it is also possible to run the PVS manager on any bwLehrpool client parallel to a running VM and to switch between both surfaces. Please contact us directly if you have any questions.

Lecturers should be made aware of the benefits of the PVS system and, if necessary, properly trained 3).

It is also recommended to lay out additional instructions, flyers or similar at the PVS stations. It is recommended to laminate the instructions to prevent people from writing on them.

An example of a common procedure for presenters:

  • (Turn on PVS manager station)
  • The lecturer prepares their lecture, as well as a virtual machine (if needed), and places the documents (presentation, etc.) in the home drive, a shared network folder or simply on a USB stick.
  • In the pool room at the lecturer's computer, they can check the PVS system checkbox in vmChooser or join the system later via the PVS client.
  • If this has not already been done this via the room selection of the satellite server, they can designate the client as a 'Tutor' using the PVS manager.
  • Now, the lecture can be held as usual and at the same time all the advantages of the PVS system can be used via the separate PVS station.

Configure PVS-Manager and create room configuraiton

Most of the configuration of the PVS manager now takes place via the web interface of the room planner of the respective satellite server. You can find more about this in the detailed operating instructions for the room planner.

The manual creation and editing of configuration files is no longer possible with the new satellite server version for WS16/17!

If you still need the old instructions, you can find them here.

Note: The manager's icons reflect the contents of the clients in a small format, so a too small monitor is not recommended.
Some lecturers like to work standing with almost horizontally mounted monitor.
These training courses tend to be short because of the ease of use of the system and are more likely to overcome initial hurdles.
